This blog is a guide on how to care and store your gold jewelry. Keep reading to learn more tips.
As a person who loves jewelry and has experienced challenges with caring for jewelry, I would like to share some tips that have helped me increase the longevity of my favorite jewelry. As I became intentional with the jewelry I added to my collection, I learned to be mindful about how to treat and take care of jewelry. Losing or ruining a favorite piece of jewelry is truly heartbreaking. Not only because of the monetary loss that comes with it, but because of the sentiment, stories, and memories that jewelry holds. I was gifted a beautiful gold herringbone necklace. I loved that necklace because someone I cared about gave it to me. I will never forget how brilliant and luxurious the gold looked when I wore it. I was never taught, or rather I never learned that it was delicate. I stored it with my other gold chain necklaces, only to find that it became tangled and kinked terribly. Herringbone chains are resurfacing in their popularity. Many celebrities like Hailey Bieber are seen wearing a bold and layered herringbone look. While we all may want to find a perfect chain, we may not know how to properly care for one. I want to share with you how to properly care for your jewelry, including herringbone chains so that you avoid the same mistakes I did.
Tip #1 - Putting on jewelry last
The key tip extends to all fine jewelry. Always remember to put your jewelry on last when getting dressed. This means after cosmetics, perfume, hairspray, lotions or other chemical substances that could be corrosive to the metal or stones. This may cause oxidation and discoloration of your gold.
Tip #2 – Removing your jewelry
If you cherish your jewelry, make habit of removing your jewelry when swimming, showering, or exercising. Chlorine, exposure to soap, and perspiration can dull gold. Consider removing when exercising to avoid scratching or misshaping your jewelry.
Tip #3 – Do not hang pendants from Herringbone chains
As much as we would love to add charms or pendants from herringbone chains, it is not a good idea. This can add too much weight and can weaken, mishappen or bend links. The nature of the herringbone construction makes it delicate. Keeping and wearing the chain flat will extend the life of your herringbone jewelry.
Tip #4 - Storage
Another important tip to care for your jewelry is properly storing it. This may help avoiding losing your favorite jewelry. Before storing your jewelry, gently wipe your jewelry with a cotton cloth before storage. Store each piece separately in covered jewelry boxes or pouches to avoid tarnishing or scratching. This will also help avoid tangled chains. Herringbone chains should always be stored flat. Have fun with your storage. I keep several beautiful trays, dishes, and boxes around the house to display my jewelry. I definitely believe in being intentional with jewelry. When I see my favorite pieces on display, it immediately evokes happiness and always find myself reaching for them to wear on their own or layer with other jewelry pieces. I have included a few of my favorite storage and cleaning supplies.
There is a misconception that real gold never tarnishes. Pure gold cannot rust, tarnish, or corrode. 14kt gold contains 58.3% of gold and is mixed with other metal alloys that make it durable, affordable, and highly sought after. It is recommended to follow the tips mentioned above to extend the life of your jewelry and to keep it in excellent condition. In short, avoid sleeping or exercising in your jewelry so that you do not lose or damage it. Avoid moisture and substances that contain chemicals to keep your from tarnishing, oxidizing, or corroding.
